Fast, Accurate Imaging, When You Need It Most
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI is a noninvasive, painless test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. It is a way to “look inside” the body without having to use X-rays.
MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency waves, and computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone, and virtually all other internal body structures. Unlike X-ray, MRI does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays), therefore there are no known side effects.Very little preparation is required. You may eat, drink, and take your medications before your MRI.
You will be asked to complete a questionnaire before your exam because of the potential harmful effects associated with some metallic objects and some patients may not be able to have an MRI done.
The following equipment or conditions may affect the MRI:
-
Pacemaker or pacing wires
-
Metal fragments in one or both eyes
-
Inner ear implants
-
Cerebral aneurysm clips
-
Implanted neurostimulator
-
Tens unit
-
Certain metal implants
-
Shrapnel or bullet wounds
-
Permanent Makeup
Tell your doctor if you are, or suspect you may be pregnant.
To ensure the safety during your exam you will be asked to change into an MRI safe gown and remove all metallic items from your body, such as your watch, jewelry, hairpins, glasses, and hearing aids. A locker is provided for your valuables to secure all of your personal belongings.-
A registered technologist will discuss the procedure with you and answer any questions you may have.
You will then be positioned on the MRI table either head first of feet first depending on the type of exam. A device called a coil may be placed or wrapped around the area being scanned. The table will slide seamlessly in the opening and you will hear a “knocking” noise as the MRI images are taken. You will have the option of watching your favorite program, listening to music or ear plugs to reduce the noise. You can even speak to your technologist during the exam if needed. At all times, the technologist will be able to see you and communicate with you on a two-way intercom.
Once the exam begins it is very important to hold completely still while the scan is being performed. Most procedures take from 30-45 minutes, depending on what is being scanned.
For exams ordered with contrast, the technologist will inject contrast into a vein in your arm to enhance the images. After your MRI exam, you may resume to your normal activities, diet, and medications unless instructed otherwise by the technologist or your doctor. Any contrast given for your exam will be eliminated in a day or two, and it is important to drink a lot of water following your exam if you have had contrast. Your exam will be reviewed and reported on by a radiologist, and the results will be sent to your doctor.
