DEXA Total Body Composition

    Is a type of DEXA or Bone density test  that uses dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in an enhanced from of x-ray technology to measure the bone mineral content predominantly in the lower back and hips.  

    The total body scan uses a three compartment model to distinguish between:

    1. Body fat Mass

    2. Lean Mass

    3. Bone Mineral Content

    To give a 98% accuracy rate. It is recommended to repeat every 3-6 months to monitor progress.

    Health & Fitness: aiming to lose weight and want to monitor fat loss and muscle gain.

    Rehabilitation: monitor lean mass through rehabilitation program with aim of minimizing muscle loss .

    Athlete: trying to achieve a low ratio of fat to lean tissue mass

    Teams: helps empirically assess team and individual responses to training.

    ​How do I prepare for my exam?

    • Get an order from physician for a DEXA Body Composition scan

    • Do not take calcium for 48 hours prior to exam.

    • Wear loose comfortable clothing (No metal)

    • Fast 1-2 hours prior to the scan

    • Hydrate Normally

    • Avoid a scan  a week before menstruation cycle as water retention can affect results

     

    Body Composition Exams are NOT COVERED by insurance companies. They are cash payment at the time of service.

    A printed report with graphics and data will be given to you following your scan. OGH Imaging DOES NOT interpret the data. You should follow up with your personal trainer/physician/coach or nutritionist.
